Nouns
Noun คือ คำที่ใช้เรียกชื่อคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ หรือสถานที่ต่างๆ เช่น a cat, an apple, a school คำนามแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ
1. proper noun คำนามชนิดนี้จะขึ้นต้นด้วยอักษรตัวใหญ่เสมอ เช่น ชื่อคน Ann, Tom, Marry ชื่อประเทศ ชื่อสถานที่ ชื่อเมือง ชื่อแม่น้ำ ชื่อทะเล ชื่อเดือน ชื่อวัน เป็นต้น
2. common noun คำนามชนิดนี้ไม่ชี้เฉพาะเจาะจง จะใช้เรียกชื่อคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ สถานที่ คำนามชนิดนี้สามารถแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ชนิด คือ
2.1 concrete noun เป็นคำนามที่มีรูปร่างสามารถสัมผัสได้ เช่น man dog book school house เป็นต้น
2.2 abstract noun เป็นคำนามที่ไม่มีรูปร่างและไม่สามารถสัมผัสได้ เช่น beauty (ความงาม) happiness (ความสุข) love (ความรัก)
2.3 collective noun เป็นคำนามที่แสดงการรวมกลุ่มของคน สัตว์ หรือสิ่งของ เช่น group, team, family, club เป็นต้น
ถ้าแบ่งคำนามตามลักษณะของการนำไปใช้ สามารถแบ่งได้ 2 ชนิด คือ
1. countable noun เป็นคำนามที่สามารถนับจำนวนได้ ซึ่งแบ่งออกเป็นคำนามเอกพจน์ (singular) และคำนามพหูพจน์ (plural)
2. uncountable noun เป็นคำนามที่ไม่สามารถนับจำนวนได้ จะปรากฏอยู่ในรูปของคำนามเอกพจน์ โดยไม่สามารถเปลี่ยนรูปเป็นพหูพจน์ได้ หมายความรวมถึงคำนามที่เป็นนามธรรม (abstract noun) เช่น
2.1 อาหาร ได้แก่ rice, bread, butter, sugar, pork, jam เป็นต้น
2.2 เครื่องดื่ม ได้แก่ ice, milk, juice, honey, coffee, water เป็นต้น
2.3 โลหะหรือแร่ ได้แก่ gold, silver, coal, iron, copper เป็นต้น
2.4 ก๊าซ เช่น oxygen, air, smoke, fog, stream เป็นต้น
2.5 อาการนามหรือนามธรรม เช่น peace, beauty, safety, honesty, goodness เป็นต้น
คำนามนับไม่ได้ไม่ต้องมีคำนำหน้าคำนามเมื่อกล่าวออกมาลอยๆ หรือไม่ชี้เฉพาะเจาะจง เราสามารถนำคำนามนับไม่ได้มานับจำนวนภาชนะที่รองรับ เช่น a bottle of water, a cup of coffee, a kilo of pork, two bags of rice, three pieces of bread เป็นต้น
ข้อสังเกต
คำนามที่เป็นอาการนาม เช่น beauty, honesty, คำนามเหล่านี้ถือว่าเป็นคำนามนับไม่ได้ คำนามนับได้มีเพียงหนึ่งเรียกว่า singular noun ถ้าคำนามตัวนั้นมีมากกว่าหนึ่งจะเรียกว่า plural noun ได้เลย เว้นแต่จะนับคำนามนั้นจากภาชนะที่รองรับหรือสังเกตจากรูปร่างของคำนามในขณะนั้น

การเปลี่ยนคำนามจากเอกพจน์เป็นคำนามพหูพจน์
1. คำนามเอกพจน์ทั่วไปเมื่อต้องการทำให้เป็นรูปพหูพจน์สามารถเติม s ได้เลย เช่น

2. คำนามเอกพจน์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย e เมื่อต้องการทำให้เป็นพหูพจน์สามารถเติม s ได้เลย เช่น

3. คำนามเอกพจน์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย s, ss, sh, ch, x, หรือ z เมื่อต้องการทำให้เป็นคำนามพหูพจน์สามารถทำได้โดยการเติม es เช่น

4. คำนามเอกพจน์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย o และหน้า o เป็นพยัญชนะเมื่อต้องทำเป็นคำนามพหูพจน์ต้องเติม es ท้ายคำ เช่น

ข้อสังเกต
ถ้าคำนามนั้นลงท้ายด้วย o และถ้าหน้า o เป็นสระ เมื่อต้องการทำให้เป็นคำนามพหูพจน์ให้เติม s ได้เลย เช่น

คำนามที่ลงท้ายด้วย o ซึ่งเป็นคำยกเว้นสามารถทำเป็นคำนามพหูพจน์ได้โดยการเติม s เช่น

คำนามเอกพจน์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย o สามารถเติมได้ s และ es เช่น

5. คำนามเอกพจน์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย y และถ้าหน้า y เป็นพยัญชนะให้เปลี่ยน y เป็น I ก่อนแล้วจึงเติม es เช่น

6. คำนามเอกพจน์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย f หรือ fe เมื่อต้องการทำให้เป็นพหูพจน์ให้เปลี่ยน f หรือ fe เป็น v ก่อน แล้วจึงเติม es เช่น

คำนามเอกพจน์บางคำที่ลงท้ายด้วย f หรือ fe ต่อไปนี้เมื่อต้องการทำให้เป็นคำนามพหูพจน์ให้เติม s ได้เลย เช่น

8. คำนามบางคำมีรูปเดียวกัน สามารถเป็นได้ทั้งเอกพจน์และพหูพจน์ เช่น

9.คำนามบางคำมีรูปเป็นเอกพจน์แต่จะใช้แบบพหูพจน์เช่น people, police, cattle, clergy (นักบวช)
10. คำนามบางคำจะมีความหมายและมีรูปเป็นพหูพจน์เสมอ เช่น scissors, trousers, clothes, shorts, glasses, goods เป็นต้น
11. คำนามบางคำจะมีรูปเป็นพหูพจน์แต่มีความหมายเป็นเอกพจน์เสมอ เช่น news, mathematics, civics, politics, physics, series เป็นต้น
12. compound noun เมื่อต้องการเปลี่ยนให้เป็นรูปพหูพจน์จะเติม s, หรือ es ที่คำนามตัวหลัง เช่น
