Background and Problem

The average grain size of crystallized ammonium sulfate is normally generated in periodic fluctuation so it is called crystal size distribution. To improve the crystal size distribution, seeding technic which is widely used will be applied at 1410, 1420 and 1460section. More productivity and stability of AS granular products are expected as same as UCHE' plant

The seed preparation is performed by adding the seed, a small crystal of the same material to be grown, into an under-saturated solution (almost saturated) as a suspension carrier without spontaneous nucleation. Finally the prepared suspension will be fed into the product crystallization stage of the crystallizer for desired crystal growth.

With less than 1 mm of ASP’ a grain size, it is preferable and suitable to be used as the seed instead of downgraded to be ASC. Nevertheless some volume of ASP product is still required as chemical grade or technical grade product in the market, so the remaining ASP can be used only 1410 section. Therefore, this project is proposed to use ASP for seeding only in 1410 section in preliminary for test and study before applying to the other sections.

Conceptual Design

In AS warehouse after ASP product is classified by a vibrating screen, 1410-S4, with a normal grain size of less than 1.0 mm (normally the lower size has to be controlled too), it will be used as seed crystals. While ASP is being conveyed to a new seeding tank by a new belt conveyor, the under-saturated solution is transferred to the tank too. The seeding tank consists of level indicators with alarm and an agitator for well mixing suspension before feeding to the crystallizer by means of a new pump. About 30 vol% of solid suspension enters into the crystallizers, 1410-V5 and 1410-V6, via tie-in points at the AS outlet of crystallizer’s heaters, 1410-E2 and 1410-E3, in the external circulation lines. The mixed suspension will be returned and delivered to super-saturation zone of the crystallizer by internal agitator though its draft tube for crystal growth. In addition to two control valves and two flow indicators with control function should be installed for adjustable flow rate of the seeding suspension. 

To control level of the seeding tank, a set of instrument for level control will be installed. Also, to control the solid concentration, an input data of % solid in the seeding tank should be able to be inserted. Instrumental signal from the level indicator and the inserted solid data will be converted to be flow rate signal by calculation before dividing to 2 signals. The first signal is transmitted to adjust a variable speed drive of a new rotary valve installed at ASP outlet of 1410-S4 to control the discharge rate from the screen to the seeding tank. A weigh scale will be proposed to measure the carrying load on the conveyor, including a transmitting function the weight data for speed adjustment of the rotary valve. Another signal is transmitted to flow control meter to adjust the flow rate of under-saturated solution to the seeding tank thru the position of its control valve. Furthermore, many RW flushing lines will be installed for clear each probably clogging line.
