Death Note Ownership
DEATH NOTE is a very complicated manga! Even more complicated is the ownership changes that occur between the notebooks. This section is designed to outline all the ownership of the notebook and track the events related to the ownership switch. PLEASE do not copy or reproduce this in any way! It took me literally 1-2 hours to put together, and lots more work to organize!!
Note*: When I mention "notebook" I mean the DEATH NOTE. Also, I mention the shinigami as "guardians" but what I mean of course, is that they are the ones haunting the notebook.

Ryuk has his notebook (Notebook 4)
Rem has her notebook (Notebook 3)
Gelus falls in love with Misa. He saves her from death by writing her stalkers' name in the DEATH NOTE (Notebook #2) . He dies, giving Misa the rest of his life-span, and Rem obtains ownership (Notebook #2). Rem is in ownership of two notebooks (2 & 3).
Shidou loses his notebook and the Shinigami King has it. Ryuk goes to the Shinigami king and says that it is the one "he lost". In Shidou's notebook he writes the basic rules of the DEATH NOTE. He is in ownership of two notebooks as well (1 & 4).
Ryuk steals Shidou's notebook and drops it, Light Yagami picks it up (Notebook 1).
Rem makes it his duty to bring the notebook to Misa Amane (Notebook 2). Misa does the shinigami eyes exchange halving her life-span.
Misa gives her notebook (Notebook #2) to Light for safe-keeping, while maintaining ownership.
Misa forfeits her notebook (Notebook #2), thus losing her memories and the shinigami eyes.
Light forfeits his safe-keeping ownership of Notebook #2 to Rem. Rem gives the ownership of Notebook #2 to Ryuk. Ryuk drops the notebook and Light regains ownership of Notebook #2. Ryuk is thus the guardian of Notebook #2.
Light gives his notebook ownership (Notebook #1) to Ryuk who was the owner before. Ryuk gives ownership to Rem. Rem goes to find someone to give this Notebook (Notebook #1) to (since it has the English rules in it). Rem is thus the guardian of Notebook #1.
Light takes Misa's original notebook (Notebook #2) and buries it. The reason for all of the above is that Ryuk would be by Misa's side when she regains her memories with that notebook, and both of them could.
Light forfeits his notebook (Notebook #1), thus losing his memories.
Higuchi gains ownership of the DEATH NOTE (Notebook #1). Rem is his guardian.
Rem touches Misa with a piece of notebook paper, so she can see her. She tells her about the plan and Light etc. (no ownership is changed and she doesn't regain her memories)
Higuchi is caught and the notebook (Notebook #1) is obtained. Souchiro Yagami , Mogi, L, and Light Yagami touch it and are able to see Rem. Light Yagami regains his memories, and by pricking his finger with a pin, writes in blood, Higuchi's name in the piece of notebook paper (from Notebook #1) in his watch. Light Yagami regains ownership of the DEATH NOTE (Notebook #1 which was previously his anyways). Rem is his guardian. But he can see Ryuk as well (due to the exchange before).
Light tells Misa to dig up 'something' which is the notebook he buried. Misa digs it up and regains memories and ownership of the DEATH NOTE (Notebook #2). Ryuuk is her guardian. Misa does the shinigami eyes exchange for ANOTHER half of her life span in order to find L's real name. (so her life-span is now decreased to 1/4 of its original after Gelus).
Aizawa and Matsuda also touch the notebook (Notebook #1) and can see Rem.
Rem realizes that Misa cannot be saved unless Rem kills Ryuuzaki. If she killed Light, Misa would lose all will to live, and if she doesn't kill Ryuuzaki soon, Misa would quickly be caught and probably killed. Rem writes Watari and L's name in her notebook (Notebook #3) and kills him. Rem Dies.
Light Yagami picks up Rem's notebook (Notebook #3) and gains ownership of it. Light Yagami now has ownership of both Notebook #1 and Notebook #3 which are not haunted by anyone. Notebook #1 is kept in the police force's care *locked up*.
Sayu is kidnapped. Mello's group gains control of the notebook (and they all touch it). The ownership switches a bit until it goes to Kal Snydar (Notebook #1).
Shidou finds Kal, and takes it from Mello and throws it on Kal. Kal can now see Shidou. Mello forces Kal to get the shinigami eyes, which he does. He is still in control of the DEATH NOTE (Notebook #1). Mello and the rest of his gang, can however see Shidou.
Light makes Misa lend him her notebook (Notebook #2). Light gives up ownership of his notebook (Notebook #3) to Ryuk who is instructed to give it to another human. Light straps Misa's notebook to himself so he can't be seen as an owner. Ryuk is now in ownership of two notebooks: Notebook #3 & 4, Misa has ownership of Notebook #2, and Light has none.
Misa mails the DEATH NOTE (Notebook #3) to the police force. The group touches the notebook. Yagami Souchirou gains ownership (Notebook #3) and then passes ownership onto Ide until the raid.
Yagami Soichiro gains ownership of the notebook (Notebook #3) and exchanges half his life span for the shinigami eyes.
Kal Snider and most of the people die, Roy becomes owner of the DEATH NOTE (Notebook #1) (It's either Roy or Skiar ._.)
Roy and Skiar are shot. Ownership of the notebook passes to Light's police force, though it isn't made clear who has the ownership as of yet.
Soichiro Yagami sees Mello's name, but doesn't kill him. Instead, he gets shot. He dies in the hospital, and the ownership of the Notebook goes back to Light (Notebook #3) afterwards. Although it isn't known who is in control of the Notebook #1 before, it isn't Light at this point.
Light has ownership of Notebook #1 and #3. Everyone in the Police force touches Notebook #1 again to see Shidou. Shidou takes back his DEATH NOTE (Notebook #1) and leaves the human world.
Misa gives up ownership of her notebook (Notebook #2) and sends it off to Mikami under Light's instructions.
Mikami gains ownership of the DEATH NOTE (Notebook #2) and Ryuk is his guardian. The Police Force has the other DEATH NOTE (under Light's ownership) under lock and key (Notebook #3)
Near gets hold of Mikami's notebook and although he isn't his owner, he can see Ryuk.
