มาใช้ adjective แบบ STRONG! กันดีกว่า (ภาษาอังกฤษที่ไม่มีสอนในห้องเรียน)

วันนี้ผมมีความรู้ที่น่าสนใจเรื่อง adjective มาแป่งปันครับ คิดว่าหลายคนน่าจะได้เอาไปใช้ในเสริมสกิล writing หรือใช้พูดในชีวิตประจำวัน

Strong adjective คืออะไร
ก่อนจะรู้จักกับ Strong adjective เรามารู้จักกับ intensifier กันก่อนนะครับ
Intensifier มาจากกริยา to intensify แปลว่า ทำให้รุนแรงขึ้น, ทำให้หนาแน่นขึ้น
Intensifier ทำหน้าที่เป็น adverb ที่ขยาย adjective ให้มีความแรงหรือเบามากขึ้น เช่น very, really, quite
This is a very interesting story. (very interesting: น่าสนใจมาก)
The movie was really exciting. (very exciting: ตื้นเต้นมาก)
I’m quite sad about what happened. (quite sad: ค่อนข้างเสียใจ)

นอกจากนี้ ยังมีคำว่า enough ด้วยนะครับ แต่ว่าไม่ได้วางไว้ข้าง adjective เหมือน intensifier ตัวอื่น
Enough จะวางไว้ข้างหลัง adjective
This is good enough.
If you are seventeen you are old enough to drive a car.
I can’t wear those shoes. They’re not big enough.
เราจะเห็นได้ว่า intensifier พวกนี้เข้ามาเพิ่มความหมายให้กับ adjective

แต่ภาษาอังกฤษยังมี adjective ที่ strong ได้ด้วยตัวเองอยู่แล้วด้วย พูดง่ายๆ คือเป็น adjective ที่มีคุณสมบัติของ intensifier ในตัว
ซึ่งเราเรียกว่า Strong adjective ครับ
เช่น     
Enormous (very big): ใหญ่มาก
Tiny (very small): เล็กมาก
Brilliant (very clever): ฉลาดมาก, ยอดเยี่ยมมาก
Awful; terrible; disgusting; dreadful (very bad): แย่มาก 
Certain (very sure): มั่นใจมาก
Delicious (very tasty): อร่อยมาก
Starving (very hungry): หิวมาก

สังเกตไหมครับเวลาแปลเป็นไทยเราจะแปลคำพวกนี้โดยเพิ่ม intensifier ไปแล้ว ดังนั้นเวลาเอาคำพวกนี้ไปใช้ห้ามเติม intensifier อย่าง very, quite, just a little bit  ให้อีกนะ
ห้ามบอกว่า The new building is very enormous (ใหญ่มากๆๆ จะใหญ่ไปไหน 5555)
แค่บอกว่า The new building is enormous ก็ใหญ่พอละครับ 

แต่อย่าเพิ่งน้อยใจแทน strong adjective พวกนี้ไป เรามี special intensifier ที่เอาไว้ใช้ขยาย strong adjective พวกนี้อยู่ครับ ได้แก่ absolutely(คำนี้จะฮิตที่สุดเลย), exceptionally, incredibly, remarkably 
เช่น 
The film was absolutely awful.
The show was exceptionally brilliant.
The food smelled really disgusting. 
*really ยังสามารถใช้กับ strong adjective ได้ แต่ห้ามใช้ very นะครับ

ลองมาดูบทสัมภาษณ์ของ Tom ดูครับ สังเกตเวลาเขาใช้ normal หรือ strong adjective
We went to see that new film. I thought it was quite funny, but Jenny though it was hilarious. The film was not so bad, but the service is absolutely terrible! We waited for nearly an hour to get our food.  When it finally arrived, I was absolutely starving. 

อันนี้ผมแปลให้ทุกคนลองวิเคราะห์ดูนะครับ
I thought it was quite funny (ผมคิดว่ามันก็ค่อนข้างตลกดี)
But jenny thought it was hilarious (แต่เจนนี่บอกว่าหนังเรื่องนี้โคตรฮาเลย)
The film was not so bad (หนังมันก็ไม่แย่เท่าไหร่หรอก)
But the service is absolutely terrible (แต่บริการนี่จัดว่าห่วยมากเลยครับ)
I was absolutely starving (ผมนี่หิวจนไส้กิ่วแล้ว)

เห็นความแตกต่างเวลาใช้ adjective แบบธรรมดา กับ strong adjective ใหม่ครับ ความรู้สึกกับอารมณ์มันคนละแบบ 55555

มีควิซมาให้ลองทำกันเล่นๆ นะครับ ลองคิดดูว่า adjective พวกนี้เป็น strong adjective หรือ normal adjective และถ้าเป็นหนึ่งในนี้ และคำนี้แบบ strong/normal คือคำศัพท์อะไร
: มีเฉลย กับ adjective อีกฟอร์มด้วยนะครับเช่น ถ้าตรงคำถามเป็น Normal adj. ช่องท้ายสุดก็จะเป็น adjective ตัวนั้นใน Strong form
