(Content by PRPKRU) The general perception of art is a painting of lines and colors on a squared canvas telling the stories from an artists’ thoughts and beliefs. However, creativity can take art out of the frame to be a sculpture where the concept and story are presented in 3D and can be seen from every direction. This makes this kind of art popular and used as landmarks in important cities around the world.
Recently, the Art and Culture Center at Phuket Rajabhat University, which is responsible for local art and culture conservation and promotion, has launched an exhibition of its 3 new sculptures: Sea of Culture, Eyes of Takuapa and Dawn of the Sea. All of the sculptures are placed at the rain tree garden on the left of the center.

Asst. Prof. Paitoon Thongdee, a lecturer at Visual Art Program and the Deputy Director of Art and Culture Center, told us the about the concept behind his work, saying that “The sculptures reflect the environment and culture of community in Toong Tuek coast on Koh Ko Kao Island in Takua Pa District, Phang Nga Province, where the community relationship, the local culture, and ecology are perfectly blended. The story of the community is reflected by parts of the sculpture e.g. waves, ancient threads, and pink dolphins, whereas the shapes and volume signify the power of living movements on the basis of coastal culture. The sculptures are designed throughout by the connections between the concepts and the origin of the story; formed by the mixture of cement mortar and color powder, finally decorated with colorful ceramic tiles telling the stories of ancient threads, community and containers founded on Koh Ko Kao Island.”

Listening to Ajarn Paitoon talk about the idea and the value of the sculptures, we must accept that art works really tell the story at the same time inspiring people. If you love visiting art exhibitions, to see beautiful appearances of the work, come and see his sculptures narrating the movement of the fish in the sea of Andaman at the sculpture garden in PKRU; it’s amazing!
